Yes! I also think it was a very intentional choice of Oyeyemi to keep things vague. For me personally, it is not my favorite, but I think there are plenty of people who would/do enjoy that. It’s like those trippy psychedelic movies where you’re never quite sure what’s going on. It’s not for everyone

Very possibly! I wondered the same thing myself. I think the biggest confusion for me throughout the book was that I didn’t get any solid answers for any questions so I didn’t know which way to focus my thoughts and ideas. I think this is the best answer for Sade though. Plus I think she’s a fighter!

Right? That part upset me so much that Miri’s father made her feel worse about herself by not letting her get a dress. I feel like he should have been building up her confidence and talking to a mental health professional about how to communicate with her if he didn’t know what the right method was

-what happens to sade? Miri calls her a witch in part 1….maybe she is! She’s also making what sounds like dolls to ward off bad spirits…maybe she does have some kind of antidote or something she made that resists the house’s magic. Sade- when she saw the mannequin, “she became stupid and babbled senselessly” maybe this was a spell!

Not being able to feel the suspense or horror as things are occurring: I think this was maybe intentional. There is a lack of detail we get regarding the surroundings of this environment and the emotional turmoil and suspense of the characters. As if there’s a film covering everything and we only get so see blurred images of what is actually occurring

Okay so something that really bothered me was the scene when Luc takes Miri shopping. When Luc agrees to go dress shopping then won’t let her get anything that fits. She already probably has a lack of confidence and knows she gets looked at strangely. Why not let her get one dress that can make her feel somewhat better?
